This garden scape is a prime example of Second Style Roman Art. The laurel trees often appear in the background of the frescos throughout the villa. According to the story, she kept the hen for breeding and planted a laurel grove which provided the wreaths worn in the Imperial triumphs. This villa was described as “ad gallinas albas,” which translates into white hens, referencing Augustus’ and Livia’s wedding day in 38 BCE, when an eagle dropped a white hen with a fruited laurel twig in its beak into her lap.
